About George Washington University (GWU)
America’s first president, George Washington, wanted to create a university in the District of Columbia and willed shares of the Potomac Company to ensure it happened. While the company failed, George Washington’s vision was realized after Baptist missionaries and a minister raised money to build the University in the nation’s capital.
George Washington University is steeped in rich tradition and history. It opened its doors in 1821 with just three faculty members, one tutor, and 30 students. Today, more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in George Washington University and there are nine schools. During the Civil War, the campus was turned into a hospital and barracks. Ten buildings on the George Washington campus are listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. George Washington is also home to many notable alumni including, J. Edgar Hoover, Colin Powell, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and J. William Fulbright.
